Can You Unsend an Email?

Imagine a scenario where you just hit "send" on an important email, only to realize seconds later that you made a mistake or forgot to attach a crucial document. What do you do? Can you unsend this email?

Well in today's digital age, being able to retract an email can be a lifesaver. In this article, we'll explore the concept of unsending an email, why it's important, and take a closer look at the two main email platforms, Outlook and Gmail, and how to unsend an email in them.

How to unsend an email in Outlook

If you're using Outlook, you're in luck because it offers an "Undo Send" feature that allows you to retract a message. To enable this feature, you need to follow a few simple steps.

Once it's enabled, you can unsend an email in just a few clicks. However, it's important to note that there are limitations to unsending an email in Outlook, and it's not a foolproof method for correcting mistakes.

Let's take a closer look at how to enable and use the "Undo Send" feature in Outlook, as well as its limitations.

To enable the "Undo Send" feature in Outlook, select the Settings icon at the top right of your Microsoft Outlook dashboard. Click View all Outlook settings to see a panel of settings; next, select Compose and reply and scroll down to Undo send. Here you can enable the undo send by increasing the slide button from 0 to 10 seconds.

What this does is delay your message for the seconds you set before sending your mail. Even though 10 seconds seems like a very short time, this can be a lifesaver whenever you mistakenly hit the send button, or when your mail is incomplete.

After you have saved this option, your emails will always have an unsend button in grey within 10 seconds after you hit the send button.

However, it's important to note that the "Undo Send" feature in Outlook has some limitations. For example, if you aren't quick enough you may not be able to recall your mail. So

Overall, while the "Undo Send" feature in Outlook can be useful for correcting mistakes, it's not a fail-safe method for unsending an email. It's always a good idea to double-check your emails before hitting send to avoid any mistakes in the first place.

How to unsend an email from Gmail

Gmail also offers an "Undo Send" feature that allows you to unsend an email if you catch a mistake or forgot to include something.

By default, you'll have 5 seconds to recall or unsend your emails in Gmail. So when you send that incomplete or wrong email, you will have 5 seconds to undo and cancel that sent email. All you need to do is to click the undo send button, and your sent email will be recalled.

If 5 seconds is too short for you, you can increase the time limit to a maximum of 30 seconds where you have the option of recalling your emails. To find this setting, Click the settings icon at the top right corner of your Gmail dashboard and select See all settings to view an expanded settings panel.

From the General tab, chose 30 seconds from the Undo send drop-down menu. Save all changes and viola! you will have a maximum of 30 seconds to recall or edit your sent emails.

If you want to do this on mobile, just download the Gmail app on your device (Android users have this preinstalled already), and this will automatically be enabled by default.

Conclusion

The "Undo Send" feature in Gmail and Outlook can be a helpful tool for correcting mistakes, but it's not a guarantee that you'll be able to unsend all emails in every scenario. It's always a good idea to check through your attachments, addresses, and items in your emails before hitting send to avoid any mistakes in the first place.

Hope this helps you. Happy (un)sending!
