It Ends With Us - Book Summary

Follow the thrilling journey of our protagonist, Lily, as she carelessly stumbles upon Ryle Kincaid on a rooftop during her father's funeral. Watch as their chemistry sizzles and burns, only to fizzle out when they realize they have different goals in a relationship. Fast forward six months and they meet again, in the most unlikely of places, a flower shop, how convenient. As their attraction grows, Ryle finally decides to give in to a relationship, despite his initial reluctance.

But wait, there's more! Lily takes a trip down memory lane, revisiting her past and longing for closure with her father's death, who was abusive towards her mother. And in a shocking twist, she rereads old journals of her encounter with Atlas Corrigan, a homeless 18-year-old boy. Will she find closure with him too? Buckle up, folks, it's going to be one wild ride.

As Lily and Ryle's relationship deepens, they become more intertwined in each other's lives, with even Lily's best friend Allysa and mother getting to know Ryle. However, their happiness is short-lived when an evening together takes a turn for the worst, with Ryle's anger resulting in him hurting Lily. Despite Ryle's apologies and assurances that he is not like Lily's abusive father, the incident raises doubts in Lily's mind. The following day, at a chance encounter with a former acquaintance, Atlas, who can tell what happened, Lily is forced to confront the harsh reality of her situation and the difficult choices she must make.

When Atlas unexpectedly confronts Lily in the restroom, she finds herself fiercely defending Ryle, her current love interest. But Atlas, fueled by anger and memories of past abuse he had witnessed, lashes out at Lily, comparing her to her own mother. Ryle intervenes, leading to a physical altercation between him and Atlas, ultimately resulting in Ryle being thrown out of the restaurant.

As the dust settles, Ryle turns to Lily, seeking reassurance of her loyalty and love. Lily assures him of her feelings and commitment to their relationship. But Atlas' reappearance in her life brings with it a flood of memories and emotions, reminding her of their close bond and past romance. Months before, Atlas had been cast out from his home, and Lily had taken him in, offering him food, clothing, and a place to stay. As they grew closer, their friendship blossomed into romance, but ultimately, Atlas left to live with an uncle in Boston, leaving Lily heartbroken.

Years later, as Atlas apologizes for his behavior and leaves his phone number for her, Lily is forced to confront her lingering feelings for him and the past that they shared. But as she reflects on her past and present, she knows deep down that her future is with Ryle.

As Lily and Ryle's relationship progresses, they decide to get married and meet each other's families. However, when Ryle discovers Atlas's number in Lily's phone, he becomes jealous and leaves in a fit of anger. When Lily goes after him to explain, Ryle pushes her down the stairs, injuring her. Despite initially refusing to take responsibility for his actions, Ryle eventually apologizes and even seeks the help of his sister. He reveals to Lily that he has a history of uncontrollable rages stemming from a traumatic incident in his childhood.

Lily is torn between her love for Ryle and the similarities between her current situation and her past experience of growing up in an abusive household. She agrees to help him but is cautious. Tragically, Ryle's behavior becomes increasingly violent, and one night he threatens, almost rapes, and hurts Lily. She calls Atlas and goes to the hospital, where she discovers that she is pregnant.

Feeling overwhelmed and alone, Lily turns to Atlas for support. He admits to having feelings for her and that he tried to find her after leaving for the military, but found her happy and didn't think he was good enough for her. As time passes, Lily confides in her best friend Allysa and her mother about her pregnancy and the abuse she has suffered. Both encourage her to leave Ryle.

After giving birth to a baby girl, Lily realizes that she doesn't want her child to grow up witnessing abuse and decides to divorce Ryle. A year later, she runs into Atlas again and indicates that she is ready to explore a relationship with him.
