The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Plot
Monique Grant, a reporter for Vivant magazine, is about to embark on the interview of a lifetime. She's been selected to sit down with the reclusive former star, Evelyn Hugo, who's auctioning off some of her famous gowns to raise money for a breast cancer charity. But as Monique arrives at Evelyn's apartment, she quickly realizes that this isn't your typical celebrity interview.
Evelyn has no interest in discussing her gowns, or anything else for that matter, with Vivant magazine. Instead, she wants Monique to write her life story. Monique is confused and suspicious but agrees to hear Evelyn out. And what a story it is.
Evelyn's journey to Hollywood begins at the tender age of 14 when she meets and marries her first husband, Ernie Diaz. But it's not long before she's spotted by a young producer at Sunset Studios and becomes fast friends with Harry Cameron. In order to advance her career, Evelyn seduces a Sunset executive and divorces Ernie. But her next marriage, to actor Don Adler, is plagued by abuse and infidelity.
Evelyn's career takes off when she stars opposite Celia St. James in an adaptation of Little Women. Initially jealous of Celia's talent, the two form a bond and even share a kiss. But when Evelyn discovers that Don has been cheating on her, she takes matters into her own hands and concocts a plan to distract the press. She seduces and elopes with singer Mick Riva, only to annul the marriage the next day. The plan works, but Evelyn finds herself pregnant and alone when Celia, furious with her, leaves her.
Evelyn's marriages to Rex North and Harry Cameron are filled with scandal, and she finds herself constantly at odds with Celia. But when Celia is diagnosed with emphysema and given less than ten years to live, Evelyn and Celia reunite and move to Spain with their daughter, Connor. Tragically, both Celia and Connor die of breast cancer, and Evelyn is left to face her own diagnosis alone.
Evelyn reveals that Monique's father, James Grant, was the passenger in Harry's car the night of the accident. Evelyn had moved the lover into the driver's seat to protect Harry from being convicted of drunk driving. Monique is furious, but ultimately realizes that Evelyn has told her all this because she intends to end her life. Monique decides that it should be Evelyn's choice and leaves, understanding that Evelyn has lived a life filled with secrets and regrets.
Though fictional, her story is one that is filled with love, loss, and sacrifice. It is a tale of a woman who fought to create her own destiny in a world that often sought to control her. From the bright lights of Hollywood to the quiet countryside of Spain, Evelyn's journey is one that will stay with you long after you've finished reading. Thank you for taking the time to read this story and for allowing me to share Evelyn's story with you.
